An Empty Chair At The Table

Hospitality sits at the heart of Saudi culture, expressed through gestures that are both simple and deeply meaningful. We wanted to share a recent editorial piece that beautifully captures this spirit—one that continues to shape everyday life and traditions across the Kingdom.

Graciously published in Condé Nast Traveller Middle East, The Iftar Table centres on a Hijazi tradition: at sunset, as families gather to break their fast during Ramadan, an extra place is set at the table - left open for the stranger who might arrive and who is always welcomed.

It is a quiet gesture, but a powerful one.

Around the table, dates are passed, delicious, lovingly prepared dishes passed down through generations are served and shared, and conversation unfolds between family and friends. The rhythm of the evening is both intimate and communal - a moment where hospitality is not performed, but simply lived and cherished.

Cultural Context

Eid marks the end of fasting and the breaking of Ramadan - a time of pause and celebration, spent with family and friends, centred around meals and recipes passed down with care and attention.

In a period of regional uncertainty, the spirit of welcome in Saudi Arabia remains constant - expressed through the home, the table, and the act of sharing.

ROAM Programming

From a ROAM perspective, this story reflects a wider direction in how we are shaping experiences across the Kingdom - with a focus on moments of cultural exchange, hospitality and lived experience.

It also marks the introduction of a new strand of programming exploring Saudi culture through the lens of home, tradition and everyday rituals.

Alongside this, we continue to develop our ROAM Spiritual & Religious Signature, with further programming being prepared for Q4 2026.

Looking Ahead

While booking patterns remain understandably cautious in the near term, we are seeing early forward interest for Q4 and beyond which is both heartening and humbling.  Our teams and partners on the ground here in the Kingdom remain passionate about sharing their stories with travellers, whenever that might be.

We look forward to sharing further details.
